It used to be that traditional metal braces were the only way to achieve straight teeth. While braces are extremely effective, they do come with some downsides. Namely, braces can feel unattractive and unprofessional to some . Now, thanks to new technology, there are currently several different ways one can achieve a straight, beautiful smile. Let’s examine some of the different options that are currently on the market.
The first options are considered quick fix instant orthodontics. These include veneers, crowns, and dental bonding. These methods are great options for those who may have a few slightly crooked teeth and do not need a full set of braces to fix their problem. The cheapest and least invasive option is dental bonding. This involves adding a tooth-colored dental “glue” (resin) to your teeth to instantly improve your smile. Teeth are fixed very quickly and there is little to no pain. While dental bonding is quick and less expensive ( $300-$600 a tooth) the results do not necessarily last long and are very prone to chipping. Dental crowns and veneers are another option to perfect a couple of crooked teeth and results are longer lasting (10-15 years). However, veneers can cost up to $3000 per tooth and will not be covered by insurance.
The next option are clear, ceramic braces. Ceramic braces are very similar to traditional braces in that they offer relatively the same efficacy and length of treatment as your typical metal braces. The main difference is in how they look. Ceramic braces use porcelain instead of metal for the brackets and are tinted to match the patient’s exact tooth color. The elastics on the brackets are also clear so they blend in seamlessly. Last, the arch wire can also be white vs. metal. Ceramic, clear braces are therefore a more popular choice amongst adults.
Last, the most popular alternative to braces is Invisalign. Invisalign treatment involves molding a clear, plastic aligner that fits perfectly over your teeth. The aligner is changed every few weeks in order to effectively straighten teeth. With each new aligner, your teeth will slowly move closer to its ideal position. Invisalign is only taken out when eating, drinking, and brushing teeth. Invisalign is completely invisible and is therefore the prefered choice amongst older teens and adults.
The great news is that there is a teeth straightening method for every circumstance, age, price range, and preference. It is always best to consult with an experienced orthodontist to figure out which method is best for you.
